Home is many things, our shelter, comfort zone, unity building and many more. Wherever we live, our mind belongs to our home, the feeling and thoughts revolve around the paradise of our reality. We strive to make it safe for everyone who lives there. That’s where the importance of gates come in handy. They secure the property and people and beings, who belong there, especially the kids, pets etc. Today we cover gates, explaining them with respect to their material and operation. Stay happy and read well everyone 😊
1.Gate Types by Material

A. Wooden:
a. Softwood Gates:
- It is more economical than their hardwood counterparts but the softwood is not as durable as the hardwood.
- There are some exceptions too, such as Balsa, it is a hardwood mainly used in model making. And Western Red Cedar, it is something with the characteristics of a hardwood but it is originally a softwood commonly found in cladding.
b. Hardwood Gates:
- Hardwood will last longer if we look after it correctly and if you are planning to use a softwood gate keep in mind that softwood option will have “here today and gone tomorrow” kind of policy.
- When you make a gate made of softwood look like a gate made of hardwood by just employing stains, at least to the experienced eye, they grasp the grain and knot content of the gate.
- They are less “knotty” than softwoods, and give out a more aesthetically attractive appearance.
c. Ledged Gates:
- The gates without a surrounding framework, these are the most basic gates around the world and mainly consist of two or three horizontal ledges on the rear of the gates with boarding screws nailed to the rails.
- One of the main disadvantages of these gates are, what you save on initial price. Within a few years-time, the party will most probably spend again replacing the gate because the gate setup is not that durable.
d. Mortice and Tenon Joined Gates:
- The gate configuration is made up of a framework that is composed of vertical uprights or stiles, as well as rails or boarding that are attached to horizontal sections.
- If possible, choose a gate with a solid head or top rail. We are doing this to avoid the exposure of elements in the end grain of the tongue and groove boardings or palings.
- Even though you coat the gate well with paint or stain, the end grain is infamously notorious for absorbing moisture and it can also split badly in the sunshine.
B. Steel Gates:
- When a modern look is desired, fabricate your gates with steel, which is now getting popular around the world. It is stronger, durable and highly corrosion resistant, and it won’t rust much like other materials.
- While the making of your dream steel gate, keep in mind to pick the best welder or fabricator in your town because, some may use stamped steel and choose inexpensive hardware and pickup caps for the fabrication of the gate to minimize the budget, that will affect the quality of your gate in the long run.
C. Iron Gates:
- People have used wrought iron in their lives for ages now, and it is a popular choice for ornamental metal works but iron no longer uses much in the industrial purposes now.
- Sculpted iron works are very detailed and easier to produce than other types of metal things, making them artistically appealing. With the help of a skilled metal worker, it is possible to fabricate fences, gates, stair railings and pickets with greater precision and aesthetics.
D. Aluminum Gates:
- Aluminum is protected by the thin layer of its natural corrosion properties, aluminum oxide; a natural, rust-resistant shield. The aluminum oxide acts and when it comes in contact with water, the aluminum and oxygen molecules can shift apart more than 50% from their normal molecular positions. As a result, its structure changes just enough to become chemically inert and unable to react rapidly with additional molecules, when the outer surface of aluminum oxide gets wet. Because of the change in molecular structure, these gate systems remain aesthetically pleasing the eyes for years.
- Naturally protected aluminum called 6063-T6 and 6105-T6 alloys were specifically designed for gate frame and track uses to enhance the corrosion resistance, tensile strength and yield strength. By a gate that both the installer and owner remain proud of year after year because of its structural integrity of the joints remains intact. For important considerations of security and safety, less effort equals lower operating costs and increased reliability.
E. Composite Gates:
- These gates are becoming extremely popular with commercial and residential consumers due to the handful of benefits they offer. Wooden gates are easy to maintain but the upfront cost is too high, you have to bear that first hand if you are opting for the composite gate systems.
- The reason for those benefits they offer are because of their composition, a variety of materials are used to create composite gates. Which are, 30% of recycled wood powder, 45% recycled polyethylene (a lightweight, durable thermoplastic) and 25% of calcium carbonate.
- Because of those materials, the composite gates have a wood-like appearance but do not carry the same risks. They look modern and are pleasing to eyes with minimal maintenance.
2. Gate Types by Operation

A. Manual Gates:
- They don’t use any electronics or automation systems and are only operated by hand, additionally they come with locks, which works mainly by a person, the lock must be latched and unlatched through hands. But if the lock is picked or broken, nothing can stop the gates from opening wide.
- There are many versions of our traditionally operated gates present in the world; they come with plenty of styles and it can be customized according to the preference of the buyer. If you are searching for manual gates, we suggest sliding gates since they are ideal for the track and rollers that provide them with an additional level of stability and an unrivalled level of security.
- Compared to automatic gates, manual gate systems are more affordable because of the absence of costly electronic features and are easily maintainable as well.
B. Automatic Gates:
- Years ago, there existed a thought that only mansion-like properties deserve high end technologies such as automatic gate systems. But it has changed drastically in recent times, because every homeowner is coming to try those systems in their homes and it’s working just fine. It enhances the quality of life, security and the aesthetic of the property really well.
- The main advantage of the automatic gate system is its convenience, because it is usually run by a motor and you just have to press the remote button in your hand for operating the system or initiating the operation.
- Because the automation systems work well in any climate, and they minimize the risk of being mugged by robbers who can pick even the hardest of locks.
