Homes have our precious belongings inside and gates are the protectors, they do their job well even though we don’t appreciate them very much for their genuine services. Come to think about their sacrifices, they make our home safe and always protected. Robots are taking over the world, even the gates getting smarter now. You must adapt or you will be thrown out, that’s the philosophy of life. Think and read well, everyone 😊
1. Types of Gates by Movement
A. Swing Gates:

a. Working:
- By swinging on hinges, creating an entryway in a fence line, it is a movable barrier that opens most probably, inwards or sometimes, outwards.
b. Types:
- Single Swing Gates: Throughout the operation, a single-swing driveway gate is made up of one solid element that swings open and closes. A single swing gate should be sufficed, if you possess less than 12 feet of area.
- Double Swing Gates: Their entirety is composed of two gates that together make up the full. Compared to single swing gates, these are more expensive because of the necessity of additional hardware (hinges, bolts, hinge posts or reception posts). The time and effort for installation are much higher and the same goes for greater planning as well. To cover the width of the driveway, the entire weight of the material necessary should be distributed among two posts instead of only one.
- Bi-Folding Swing Gates: Each leaf (part) is able to travel well in the direction that they choose thanks to the one-of-a-kind double-hinged system that allows it to fold back and forth onto itself. Perfect for upward or uneven slops and with bi-folds, any shift in gradient can be easily fixed. In comparison to sliding or swing gates, bi-folds take up only a fourth of the width of the original gate when they are in the open position. As a result, they save you room during the installation process. To achieve the intricate design, the wrought iron is needed but if you are looking for a modern but classic look, you can go for wooden bi-folds as well.
B. Sliding Gates:

Working:
- They function by moving across a driveway opening into space that is created by the same structure. This is done on the side of one gate post that is aligned with the opening and is longer than the gate. With wheels beneath its base that runs down a track across the driveway entrance, the gate post is often a single leaf or section that moves forwards and backwards.
- The sliding gates that are driven by the motor are paired with a toothed gear that projects outward. As the motor revolves around the cog, the setup connects to a rack within the gate, opens and closes accordingly.
b. Types:
- Tracked Gates: The majority of the gate’s weight is supported by wheels, and the majority of the gates are transported along a track that is fixed in place. The gate itself typically features automated operation and the track is installed along the opening, running at the base of the gate. Compared to cantilever gates, track sliding gates are mechanically simpler but require a higher level of maintenance, especially in the track area. For sites with uneven ground or slopes, these gates are relatively unsuitable.
- Cantilever Gates: The design does not require a track to run along the opening because it is counterbalanced. In addition to being attached to the bottom of the gate, it is supported by rollers that are mounted on posts and glide down a track that is tubular. There should also be a mechanism at the top that allows the guide rollers to move the gate. Perfect for gates in the span of uneven ground or the slop is upwards. This form of gate has one and only one drawback, and that is that the length of the gate is longer than the gap length span of your site. This is done in order to counterbalance the trailing end of the gate.
C. Vertical Lift Gates:
a. Working:
- When slide gates and swing gates fail in space conditions, the vertical lift gates become the only solution. The standard length of the gate can be between 24’ to 26’ and height is even up to 8’, and the style varieties ranging from Arched Estate to Chain Link and materials are in steel or aluminum.
- The main drawback for vertical lift gates is high initial investment, however their low maintenance costs and reliability offset the expenditure over time and they have higher repairing costs, if a damage occurs, unfortunately.
D. Vertical Pivot Gates:
a. Working:
- They can eliminate the issues when you have larger gaps that may be revealed under the traditional gates and you only have a limited space to slide open the gate. This configuration calls for the need of a gate operator, and the gate most likely pivots up and down from one side of the gate opening. Additionally, the gate is of a lighter weight.
- By controlling access on and off your property, the setup works mainly in combination, which means, the hydraulic cylinder and the tension in spring allows the safe working of this type of gate system.
- According to the established grade, the slope of the terrain that surrounds the entry does not really have an effect on the placement of this gate. The vertical pivot gates are able to accommodate snow and ice without any problems because they simply pivot upwards, which allows them to overcome these obstacles.
- The cost of installation is high compared to other gate systems. The important thing to understand is, the operator is designed to operate the gate from a very single point and that means it is somewhat more powerful and includes more weight to help offset the movement. The resting pad of the operator is also important and because of that the amount of this gate system could be higher.
E. Telescopic Gates:

a. Working:
- It is the best space saving option there is in the case of different types of sliding gate systems, because when compared to a sliding gate with a single leaf, the design is made up of 2 or 3 leaves that overlap each other when opening and which results in less operating space.
- Thanks to the cable pulling kit, the leaves that slide on parallel ground guides are packed together and completely overlap each other when the gate opening process is initiated.
- When gate automation is in work, it is advised by the experts to use a low voltage gear motor and it must be applied to the main leaf where the rack is to be installed. Because of the cable pulling kit, the rest of the leaves, that is second and third ones will move simultaneously with the first one, which would offer a flow like operation and the motor should be equipped with the latest generation of electronics, that is a gear motor with encoder and that allows you to slow down the gate stroke.
