Invasions happen in every world era. Come to think of it, complete world peace is a myth. There are people constantly suffering at some part of the world every time. The home invasion of pests and ants are no different either. They bring chaos in our little world and pose a threat to the peaceful home operations.
How should we take care of ants and pests?

The answers coming below
1. Peppermint
The scent can deter ants from entering your home. It can also repel ants because it has the capacity to disrupt ants’ sense of smell, communication and navigation systems. And the strong scent of peppermint effectively masks the pheromones and makes it difficult for them to find food and follow their scent trails. The main components in peppermint oil, like menthol, menthone, and limonene, interfere with ants sensory receptors.
- Saturate cotton balls with peppermint oil and place them in areas around the entry points of ants in your home.
- And use peppermint sachets near doors and open windows.
- Take 230 ml of water or rubbing alcohol and mix 10 – 15 drops of peppermint essential oil to create a spray.
- With a few drops of peppermint oil, mix dried herbs like mint leaves, lavender, and rosemary to create an ant repellent potpourri.
2. Diatomaceous Earth
It is a non toxic powder made from the sediment of fossilized algae or diatoms, a type of plankton. It is about 80 – 90 % silica, an essential trace mineral important for bones, blood vessels, cartilage, and tendons. Diatomaceous earth (DE) is an absorbent and abrasive powder that can control pests like mites and insects. It is an inexpensive and effective way to kill ants. The sharp and pointed surface of DE scrapes the ant’s exoskeleton. It gets stuck to the feet, legs and joints of the ants. The DE removes oils and fats from the exoskeleton of ants and they dry out and die from dehydration.
- Wherever you see ants, sprinkle DE there.
- Apply DE along the ant trails, baseboards, floors, window sills and cracks of the wall.
- Apply around the perimeter of your home.
- Wait for 24 to 48 hours.
- And then wash the area and clean up the DE.
3. Tea Tree Oil
It is a natural, eco-friendly way to repel and kill ants. Tea tree oil acts as a natural repellent, disrupting their pheromone trails which are crucial for foraging and communication. Due to its strong scent that ants dislike, it can effectively deter them from entering treated areas. Tea tree oil can mainly be used to treat infestation in your home and garden without using harsh chemicals.
- Use 2 cups of water which mix with 5 – 10 drops of tea tree oil in a spray bottle
- Where ants are active, spray the mixture there.
- Soak cotton balls in mixture and place them around main entry points.
- Keep the oil mix from the reach of pets, especially cats.
4. White Vinegar
Its acidic nature acts as a natural repellent, by confusing them and disrupting their pheromone trails. Which effectively deterred them from entering an area and preventing them from finding food sources due to the strong smell they dislike. It efficiently helps keep ants away from main areas without harming them. Compared to many chemical pesticides, when mixed with water, vinegar is considered a safe and environment friendly option for ants control.
- You can easily mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray it around entry points, areas where ants are seen and baseboards.
- Before spraying liberally, always test it on small inconspicuous areas because vinegar can damage certain surfaces.
- It may not entirely eradicate a large ant colony but vinegar can effectively deter ants from a specific area.
5. Coffee Grounds
Because of their chemical composition and texture, coffee grounds can repel ants. The caffeine in coffee grounds stimulates the central nervous system of ants. It is difficult for ants to follow their scent trails because the texture of coffee grounds makes it so and the acids in coffee grounds damage the skeleton of ants too. Keep in mind that coffee grounds don’t have the ingredients to kill ants. Ants can eventually work a way around the grounds, very likely possible.
- Disposable Surfaces where ants congregate, like window sills, or pet bowls, sprinkle freshly brewed coffee grounds for optimum results.
- Mix the grounds with hot water and pour it over anthills.
- Around the foundation and entrances of your house, lay down a 2 inch wide line of coffee grounds, which effectively repel ants.
- Bear in mind that ants can eventually work out a way around the grounds very much.
6. Neem Oil
It can mainly be used to kill and repel ants. It is clearly a natural, effective and broad spectrum insecticide that can be used on a wide variety of insects. Azadirachtin, the most active component of neem oil, can reduce feeding, repel insects, and interfere or mimic with their hormonal systems that confuses the body and brain of insects making them difficult to grow and reproduce. Fatty acids in neem oil disrupt the structure of the insect’s cell membrane, causing the leak out of cell contents and the insect to die. Neem oil can be used as an alternative to synthetic insecticides. It is harmless and it doesn’t lead to the development of resistant pests. Neem oil can be used to treat fungal diseases in plants.
- Use pure neem oil or neem soap to use against ants and aphids.
- Mix with water and spray the solution around and over the affected areas.
- Clearly draw a circle around the ants using a bar of neem soap.
7. Boric Acid
It is an efficient way to kill ants and other pests, a stomach poison, because their nervous systems, digestive systems, and exoskeletons could be damaged, leading to dehydration and death. Boric acid can affect the entire colony, including the queen and brood. It is a slow acting powder or liquid bait that adheres to the skeleton of ants. They ingest the powder when they groom their small legs. Including the queen, the ants carry the boric acid back to their colony and share it with others. Boric acid can affect and kill the whole colony even if the nest is far away. It can mainly kill carpenter ants and other pests.
- Like sugar or other sweets, mix boric acid with a food source to attract ants.
- Place the mixture in areas where ants are mainly present.
- Remember to always wear gloves and take other precautions to protect yourself and your family.
8. Popular Insecticides
- Carbamate: A type of pesticide, which affects the nervous system by disrupting an enzyme that regulates neurotransmitters.
- Endosulfan: A solid insecticide that is mostly cream to brown in color and can exist in the form of flakes or crystals.
- Ace hate: A systemic insecticide that controls biting and sucking insects by ingestion or direct contact.
- Azadirachtin: A biological insecticide that mainly controls pests by contact or ingestion.
- Diazinon: An organophosphorus insecticide that mostly controls pest’s insects in soil, on ornamental plants and on fruit and vegetable fields.
- Dicrotophos: An insecticide that controls aphids, flea hoppers, stink bugs, plant bugs and thrips in cotton.
- Tebufenozide: An insecticide that acts as a molting hormone that causes premature molting in larvae.
