The life of ours is something precious just like our homes because we belong there in this world with our loved ones. And we need them and our other belongings there to be safe and protected. That’s where the locks came in and they exist solely in this world to support our betterment, make our life freer. In this blog we are about to discuss different types of home lock systems, their detailed descriptions and peculiarities. Read well everyone 😊
1. Lock for Exterior Doors

A. Deadbolts
- The lock is mainly designed to fit into the edge of the timber door and with a key, it allows the door to be locked from both the sides. For the operation of a door knob/handle, a deadlock is only a lock bolt and does not have a latch or catch section. The lock system of this type is available in either 3 or 5 levers.
- When you are choosing the right deadlock, you will probably need to make sure efficiently that you choose the right size for your door. The typical deadlock has a 3-inch case with a backset of approximately 57mm and backset means that the distance from the door to the center of the keyhole.
- 5 Lever Deadlocks: Mainly used in wooden back or front doors and because it has additional levers inside the lock, the insurance companies are recommended to use them or it is suitable for exterior doors. This results in the keys being hard to copy or break into and bear in mind that when you choose your lock it should have the British standard of BS362 kitemark.
- 3 Lever Deadlocks: These door locks are preferred for internal doors because they lack more levers which is compulsory in exterior doors because the security is a must. And in internal rooms where privacy is the main concern, these door locks provide sufficient security for your comfort.
B. Mortise Locks
- These lock systems are so mysterious because they are assembled from many curiously odd shapes, enclosed in a heavy-gauge steel case with its mechanical parts and that appear to represent a secret code effectively by which they are punctured with circular or square shaped holes.
- They are cut into the edge of the door and are mysteriously hidden inside a pocket. The installation is not a DIY project because it has to make precise cutting of the pocket.
- The functions are multiple, and which includes entrance, classroom security, storeroom, office and passage because they most function well in hospitals and schools. It’s hard to understand the working of a mortise lock in simple look, although the configuration of the latches and the bolt give some clues.
- The lock cutouts may weaken the structure of the door but compared to cylindrical locks the mortise locks are unimaginably stronger. Because they offer architectural conformity to existing security hardware, they give leverage and last longer than cylindrical locks.
C. Smart Locks
- Being a smart lock means which allows you to connect your lock systems to various smart appliances of your home through your home Wi-Fi. The connection allows you to activate the lock remotely, just like you can check if it’s locked or unlocked and in simple words, the lock system helps you understand the status of your smart lock from virtually anywhere in the world.
- Keyless Entry: It is possible to unlock the door when you lose or forget the key, or someone other than you at the door but they didn’t have the key and they just have to type the code you set on the lock system to enter the property or home. This works best if you have a kid of yours who will reach home before you do or your relatives staying for a visit and you can even change the pin in one tap on the app provided by the company who installed the system.
- Mobile Access: With an internet connection, you can unlock and lock your door from anywhere in the world by using your smart phone and which also helps you track more data like how often household members or guests are coming and going.
- Mobile Alerts: If you turn on the mobile notification settings you can easily get app alerts about the lock system of your home like important updates, some unknown men activity at your door etc.
- Bump Guard: The lock systems are also provided with additional securities like bump guard, which prevents potential burglars from entering the home effectively.
2. Locks for Interior Doors

A. Knob Locks
- The system works like the keyhole has a knob instead of a hole and that prevents the lock from picking easily or generates a force open. The knob is hard to pick because it cannot be turned without using a tool. They function well in homes, offices and businesses. Because they are effective at preventing unauthorized entry, they are often used as security devices. It is easy to install them and not much special skills needed but they offer top notch security.
- They are different from other types of locks because, rather than keys, they are operated by levers. The mechanism is like: to rotate the bolt outwards, you push the lever in, and then to retract the bolt, you pull it back; no need for spare keys.
- They are one of the most used lock types in the world today because they are easy to set up without much help from a professional. And to buy and install them you don’t actually need a lot of money, the inexpensiveness of the lock made it more popular among people ever.
- They are easily pickable than regular locks but they are a bit more difficult to pick than a regular deadbolt. Because they are small they cannot be used in places or large doors like garage doors but they are perfect for small inside doors and work perfectly alright.
B. Lever Handle Locks
- As the name suggests, the door lock has a lever on the outside of the door and the lever can be pulled outwards to open and push the inward to close it. These locks are perfect for those who do not want to keep the keys with them all day long.
- Pin Tumbler Lock: It works like a combination lock, which means each number corresponds to a different part of the lock, because it operates by turning a series of pins and as the numbers are turned, the parts of the lock move and interact with each other. In other words, when the levers are pulled down, the pins are arranged in such a way that it lines up correctly and the door can be opened once the pins are lined up in a straight line and in a right combination.
- Cylinder Lock: These locks work differently because the entire lock is moved when the lever is pressed instead of having separate parts to be internally operated one by one. It works by moving a barrel containing a large number of pins and they fit into the desired slots of the barrel. When the lever is pulled down and released, the pins automatically drop into their corresponding and programmed slots. This initiates the barrel to rotate, which influences the pins and moves along the slots.
C. Privacy Locks
- You have probably got an idea of the lock from its name, yes, it is as same as the name suggests. It provides individual privacy when people are within a room and the lock operates on simple steps or mechanisms. They function well in bathrooms, bedrooms or offices.
- The mechanism is to stop a door from opening unauthorized by another user of the property and there are times when we need a bit of privacy to our personal space. In terms of standard push down door handle, which is only opened by an individual applying force down on the handle which retracts the latch and releases the door. And which also has a notification area or sliding display, where it is clearly marked that the room is in use which informs someone else who is going to operate that door well.
3. Other Locks Types

A. Padlocks
- They come in many shapes, colors and designs and they have been around for hundreds of years now, ranging from complex inner mechanisms because people make use of its capacity well.
- It has a most noticeable feature that is a shackle at the top, which is U-shaped with two notches at the both ends. For locking, you have to simply align the end of the shackle with the hole in the lock body and push these together. The internal locking mechanism will engage and you will hear a “click” sound.
- The plug initiates the key entry, and the key will slide into that and follow the grooves to ensure a smooth and hassle-free transition.
B. Cam Locks
- One of the common but most essential components in security solutions around the world and they are used to secure a building’s power grid in the electrical cabinet; the lock is ideal in minimalist design and functionality.
- The lock is mainly a fastener and characterized by its simplicity and effectiveness in design. And the mechanism is mainly a cylindrical lock body that is fitted into a hole in the panel that needs to be secured. It works like, on the back of the lock body is a straight or offset lever known as a cam and when the lock is opened with a key the cam turns behind the frame which is fixed on the wall and that results effectively preventing the panel from being opened. The lock offers a lower to medium level of security.
